Description

Clinicians need to be aware of how to use technology when determining the presence of a head injury; as well as how to use technology and biometrics to make appropriate return to activity recommendations among those with concussion and mTBI. Being able to understand objective pupillary data can assist the clinician in making quick assessments and clinical decisions to prevent further brain trauma.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Summarize pupillometry
  2. Summarize what the pupil can tell us about the autonomic nervous system and brain
  3. Summarize the functional anatomy of the neurodynamics of pupillary reaction to light
  4. Identify what happens to the neural pathway between the brain and eye when an individual is suffering from a mTBI
  5. Identify the issue with using a pen light to assess pupil reaction and size
  6. Identify what parameters of PLR one should use to objectively assess mTBI
  7. Identify the evidence of using a mobile pupillometry among active population to assess autonomic nervous system responses and mTBI

Format

This course is fully online and self-paced, with no synchronous online meetings. It must be completed within 1 year of registration.

Credits

This course qualifies for 1 Category A CEU approved by the BOC.

Andrew Doyle, PhD, LAT, ATC, CSCS, Astym-Cert

Andrew Doyle has been in the world of athletic training since 2005. He attended Indiana Wesleyan University for Athletic Training. Following his undergraduate education, he attended Western Michigan University and attained his master’s degree. In 2017, Dr. Doyle earned his PhD at RMUoHP in Athletic
Training. Since 2007, Dr. Doyle has been educating athletic trainers while maintaining a clinical practice.
Currently, he is an adjunct professor at Trine University in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program
teaching evidence based practice and facilitates research. Dr. Doyle also works as a clinical athletic
trainer at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN and assists with the development of the Athletic Training Residency there. In addition to these duties, he is also the President and Director or Clinical Intervention at Elevate Wellness Solutions, LLC. Read more
